5th XI

Captain's Welcome:

Training Times:

Tuesday: 1800-2000 at Wide Lane

Welcome to the Southampton University Men’s Hockey Club (SUMHC) 5th XI page. My name is Dec Owen, I am a third year Mechanical Engineering student and the 5th XI captain for the 2017/18 season.

The 5th XI competes on Saturdays in the world renowned Hampshire League Division 7. We finished 8th out of 10 last year due to a mixture of some brilliant and some not-so-brilliant performances. I want to replicate how we played in those brilliant games, week in week out, so that with a little help from our weekly training sessions, we can become more solid and consistent in the league and perhaps even push for promotion.

Everyone who wants to play is given the opportunity to play and train with us, no matter how much or little hockey experience you have. We’ve had many members that had never even held a hockey stick before but ended up being a vital part of the team and club.

The 5th XI is a very social team, having socials regularly on Saturdays and of course participating in the legendary Wednesday circles with the whole club. In the team socials calendar we have many highlights. Including, but not limited to; the fresher house crawl (which occurs in the first few weeks of term where we get to know the newest members of the team) and the occasional mixed socials with the lovely ladies from SULHC 5th XI. Along with the alcoholic side of the team we also promote team socials for days out such as paint-balling and the odd film here and there.

If you are still not convinced, do not hesitate to get in touch with any current members of SUMHC and they will tell you that joining this magnificent club was the greatest decision they ever made. I look forward to meeting all of you next year and showing you why this is the greatest club in the Athletic Union.
